History of the Coal Mine
Helen has a rich history tied to coal mining. The Helen mine and its coal camp were first opened in the 1910s. The East Gulf Coal Company started this important operation.
Over the years, different companies ran the mine. The Koppers Coal company took over its operations. Later, it became part of Eastern Gas & Fuel - Coal Division. Finally, it was known as Eastern Associated Coal Company. This company continued to operate the Helen mine into the 1980s.
