Helen Maud Merrill was born in Bangor, Maine, on May 5, 1865. From 1881 to 1887, she lived in Bucksport, Maine. When she was a child, Helen was often sick. Her mother took great care of her.

In 1889, Helen moved to Portland, Maine. There, she joined several writing groups. She showed a talent for writing from a young age. Starting in 1882, she wrote both stories and poems for newspapers.

Humor and Honored Works

Helen wrote funny stories using her pen name, "Samantha Spriggins." Many people enjoyed reading these stories. In 1885, she wrote a poem about the death of General Ulysses S. Grant. She sent it to his wife, who thanked her for it.
