Carex helleri is a type of plant often called Heller's sedge. It's a kind of sedge, which is a grass-like plant.

You can find Heller's sedge growing naturally in the eastern parts of California and the western parts of Nevada. It likes to live in rocky areas on mountain slopes and other similar places.

What Does Heller's Sedge Look Like?

Heller's sedge grows in thick bunches. Its stems are thin and stand straight up, reaching about 30 to 50 centimeters tall. That's roughly the length of a standard ruler!

Flowers and Fruit

The plant produces groups of flowers called an inflorescence. These flowers grow in overlapping spikes and are covered by dark brown or black scales.

After the flowers, the plant makes fruit. Each fruit is wrapped in a special covering called a perigynium. This covering is usually reddish or purplish and has a pointed tip, like a small beak.
