Where it Lives
The Hemiancistrus votouro lives in streams in Brazil. These streams are usually between 2 and 5 meters (about 6.6 to 16.4 feet) wide. The bottom of these streams is made of rocks and sand. There are also plants growing along the edges. The streams have fast-moving sections called rapids, and calmer, deeper areas called pools.
What's in a Name?
The name Votouro for this catfish comes from a special place. It honors the Votouro Indian Reserve. This reserve is located in a town called Benjamin Constant do Sul, in the Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil.
