Station History
This train station first opened on 2 October 1880 for goods. It started offering all services, including passenger trains, on 21 December 1880.
On 21 August 2010, a special area called a "Distributed Stabling Facility" was opened. This facility is a place to store and clean up to 11 trains when they are not in use. It also has parking and facilities for staff. It was built here because local people did not want it to be built at Ranui railway station.
Station Upgrade
A big upgrade of the Henderson station was finished on 24 October 2006. The newly improved station officially opened on 2 November 2006. This was 125 years after the railway first came to Henderson.
Station Design
The station now has an island platform. This means the platform is in the middle, with train tracks on both sides. Stairs and escalators, which are enclosed in clear panels, help people get around. They connect to a walkway above the tracks. This walkway links to the council's office buildings and to Railside Avenue nearby.
Station Name Change
When the station was upgraded, there was a plan to rename it Waitakere Central. This was because it was connected to the new Civic Building of the Waitakere City Council. However, many people worried this new name would cause confusion. There is already another station called Waitakere railway station on the same Western Line.
Because of this opposition, the station kept its original name, Henderson. Waitakere Central is only used as a subtitle. In everyday life, people always call it Henderson station. The council, however, uses Waitakere Central to refer to its own buildings, which are directly above the train platforms.
Train Services
Transdev Auckland, working for Auckland Transport, runs the local train services. These trains travel between Swanson and Britomart.
Bus Connections
Many bus routes also stop at the transport area on Railside Avenue. These bus routes include 14t, 14w, 120, 131, 133, 133x, 134, 138, 141, 142, 143, 146, 152, 154 and 162.
