Hendon was a special area in Middlesex, England. It was called a "rural district" and existed from 1894 to 1934. A rural district was a type of local government area. It usually covered countryside areas and small villages.

What Was Hendon Rural District?

The Hendon Rural District was a way to manage local services. It helped with things like roads and public health in the countryside. This area was different from a town or city, which had its own rules.

How It Started

The Hendon Rural District was created in 1894. This happened because of a new law called the Local Government Act 1894. This law changed how local areas were run across England.

The district included several smaller areas called parishes. These parishes were:

At the same time, the main area of Hendon became an "urban district." An urban district was for areas that were more like towns. So, Hendon Urban District and Hendon Rural District existed side-by-side.

What Happened Next?

By the 1930s, the Hendon Rural District started to change. More and more people moved there, and it became less like the countryside. It started to look more like a town. This process is called "urbanisation."

Because of these changes, the government decided to review the area. A new law, the Local Government Act 1929, led to these reviews. In 1934, the Hendon Rural District was officially ended, or "abolished."

Its land was then split up. Most of it became part of the Harrow urban district. The parish of Edgware joined the Municipal Borough of Hendon in 1932. This marked the end of the Hendon Rural District.
