Henk's Football Journey
Playing for Clubs
Henk played football for two main clubs during his career. One was HBS-Craeyenhout in the Netherlands. The other was Royal Léopold Club in Belgium.
In the 1901-1902 season, his Belgian team, Royal Léopold Club, almost won the Belgian championship. They finished as the "runner-up," meaning they came in second place. They lost a very close deciding match to Racing Club de Bruxelles with a score of 3-4.
Olympic Games and International Play
In 1900, Henk was part of the Belgian team that won the bronze medal at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. This was a big achievement!
It might seem strange that a Dutch player played for Belgium. But back then, it was quite common for athletes to play for different countries, especially in early Olympic events.
Henk played one match in the Olympic football tournament. He was a forward and scored one goal. His team lost that game 2-6 to France, who were represented by a club called Club Français.
Early European Tournament
The year 1900 was very busy for Henk. Besides playing in the Olympics, he also took part in the first-ever European club tournament. This competition was called the 1900 Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz.
Henk played in this tournament as a player for Royal Léopold Club. However, their journey in the tournament was short. They were knocked out in the first round by the Dutch champions, HVV. The score was a big 8-1 loss. Henk scored the only goal for his team in that match.
