History of Henrietta Township

Early Settlers and Trading

One of the first people to settle in this area was Jean Baptiste Berard. He arrived in 1816 and set up a trading post in 1831. A trading post was a place where people could trade goods, often furs, with Native Americans and other settlers. Batteese Lake and Batteese Creek are named after him, as his name was sometimes spelled "Battise."

How Henrietta Got Its Name

The township was officially started in 1837. It was first called "West Portage." But in 1839, a man named Henry Hurd had the name changed to "Henrietta." He named it after his hometown, Henrietta, New York.

Post Offices in the Past

For many years, there were different post offices in the area.

  • A post office called "Portage" opened in 1838. Its name changed a few times, eventually becoming "Henrietta" in 1840. It closed in 1903.
  • Another post office, "South Henrietta," opened in 1851 and closed in 1866.
