Henriette Adelaide of Savoy (6 November 1636 – 13 June 1676) was an important princess who became the wife of Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria. She was known for her strong influence and worked with her husband to improve Bavaria, their adopted home. Henriette Adelaide was a daughter of Victor Amadeus I, Duke of Savoy. She was the older of twins; her sister was Catherine Beatrice of Savoy. Her mother was Christine of France, who was a daughter of King Henry IV of France. Christine also served as a regent for her brother, Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy.

Becoming an Electress

On 8 December 1650, Henriette Adelaide married Ferdinand Maria. He was the future ruler of Bavaria. Just one year later, Ferdinand Maria became the Elector when his father, Maximilian, passed away. This made Henriette Adelaide the Electress of Bavaria.

Influence and Building Projects

As Electress, Henriette Adelaide had a lot of influence on Bavarian politics. She often supported closer ties with France. This led to her oldest daughter, Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria, marrying the Grand Dauphin of France in 1680. This was a very important marriage for Bavaria.

Henriette Adelaide also played a big part in planning and building two famous places. These were the beautiful Nymphenburg Palace and the grand Theatinerkirche in Munich. Both are still important landmarks today.
