About Henry's Family
Henry Belasyse was the son of Thomas Belasyse, 1st Earl Fauconberg. His mother was Catherine Betham.
Henry's Political Life
Henry Belasyse was a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Peterborough. He served as an MP from 1768 to 1774. An MP is a person elected to represent people in the government.
He belonged to the Whig party. The Whigs were a major political group in Britain at that time.
When his father passed away in 1774, Henry inherited his father's title. This meant he became the Earl Fauconberg. He then took his place in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is another part of the British Parliament, made up of nobles and bishops.
Henry also held several important jobs. From 1777 until his death, he was a Lord of the Bedchamber. This meant he was a close attendant to the King. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of the North Riding of Yorkshire. This role was like being the King's main representative in that area.
Raising a Regiment
In 1779, Henry helped create a special army group. It was called 'Lord Fauconberg's Regiment' or 'Fauconberg's Fencibles'. These were soldiers who served only within Britain. Henry was the colonel, or leader, of this regiment. The regiment was active until 1783, when it was disbanded.
Marriages and Children
Henry Belasyse was married twice.
First Marriage
On May 29, 1766, he married Charlotte Lamb. She was the daughter of Sir Matthew Lamb, 1st Baronet. Charlotte was also the sister of Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne.
Henry and Charlotte had four daughters:
- Lady Anne Belasyse (1760–1808): She married Sir George Wombwell, 2nd Baronet in 1791 and had children.
- Lady Charlotte Belasyse (1767–1825): She married Thomas Edward Belasyse-Wynn but did not have any children.
- Lady Elizabeth Belasyse (1770–1819): She married Bernard Howard, 12th Duke of Norfolk in 1789 and had children. Later, she married Richard Bingham, 2nd Earl of Lucan in 1794 and also had children with him.
- Lady Harriet Belasyse (1776–died young): She passed away when she was young.
Second Marriage
On January 5, 1791, Henry married Jane Cheshyre. She was the daughter of John Cheshyre. Jane passed away on April 4, 1820. Henry and Jane did not have any children together.
Because Henry had no sons, his title of Earl ended when he died. His cousin, Rowland Belasyse, inherited his other titles, Viscount and Baron. Henry's wife's nephew was William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who later became a British Prime Minister.
