Bernard Edward Howard, 12th Duke of Norfolk (born November 21, 1765 – died March 16, 1842) was an important British nobleman. He held the title of Duke of Norfolk, which is a very old and respected position in Britain. He was also known for supporting religious freedom for Catholics.

Early Life

Bernard Howard was born into a well-known family. His father was Henry Howard, and his mother was Juliana Molyneux. His family had a long history in England. His great-grandfather was a younger son of an earlier Earl of Arundel, showing his connection to a noble lineage.

His Career and Public Life

Bernard Howard became the Duke of Norfolk in 1815. He inherited this important title after his cousin, Charles Howard, the 11th Duke, passed away.

The Howard family was mostly Roman Catholic. At the time, Catholics in Britain faced some restrictions. Bernard Howard strongly believed that Catholics should have the same rights as everyone else. This movement was called Catholic Emancipation.

He was very happy when the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829 was passed. This law gave Catholics more freedom. To celebrate, he held a large dinner, which showed his strong support for the new law.

Bernard Howard also received several honors during his life. In 1803, he was chosen as an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a group that recognizes important thinkers and leaders. Later, in 1834, King William IV made him a Knight of the Garter. This is one of the highest honors a person can receive in Britain.

His Family Life

In 1789, Bernard Howard married Lady Elizabeth Belasyse. Their marriage ended after five years, in 1794. They had one son together:

Bernard Howard passed away in 1842 when he was 76 years old. After his death, his only son, Henry, became the 13th Duke of Norfolk. Bernard Howard was buried in the Fitzalan Chapel at Arundel Castle. This castle is a historic home of the Dukes of Norfolk.
