Profession Army officer, civil servant, politician

Henry Arthur Cadogan, Viscount Chelsea (born 13 June 1868 – died 2 July 1908) was a British Army officer, a civil servant, and a politician. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant, which is a special helper to the King's or Queen's representative in a county.

He was known as Viscount Chelsea, which was a courtesy title. This means it was a title used out of politeness, but it didn't give him a seat in the House of Lords. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He was elected twice to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bury St Edmunds. Before becoming an MP, he was a captain in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He also worked as a civil servant for the Prime Minister.

Henry's father, George Cadogan, 5th Earl Cadogan, was very important. He helped develop parts of Kensington and Chelsea in London. His father also represented the King or Queen in Ireland as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Henry became the expected heir to his father's title when he was just 10 years old. Sadly, he passed away at age 40, before his father did. He also did not have any sons who lived past childhood.

Early Life and Family

Henry Arthur Cadogan was the second son of the 5th Earl Cadogan. His mother was Lady Beatrix Craven. When Henry was 10 years old, on 2 August 1878, his older brother passed away. This meant Henry became the next in line to inherit his father's important title. At this point, he received the courtesy title of Viscount Chelsea. This title was first given to his family in 1800 because they owned the land in Chelsea.

His father later became a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen. From 1895 to 1902, his father also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

His Careers

Lord Chelsea had three main careers during his life. He was an officer in the British Army, a civil servant, and a politician.

He served as a captain in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. This was an infantry regiment of the British Army.

He also worked as a Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. At that time, the Prime Minister was officially called the First Lord of the Treasury.

In 1892, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bury St Edmunds. He served as an MP for eight years. In February 1904, he was also made a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of London.

Marriage and Children

On 30 April 1892, Henry married Mildred Cecilia Harriet Sturt. She was the daughter of a politician named Henry Sturt, 1st Baron Alington. Their wedding took place at Holy Trinity, Sloane Street in Chelsea.

Henry and Mildred had six children together:

  • Sibyl Louise Beatrix (1893–1969), who married Lord Stanley.
  • Edith Mary Winifred (1895–1969), who married the 3rd Baron Hillingdon.
  • Cynthia Hilda Evelyn (1896–1966), who married Sir Humphrey de Trafford, 4th Baronet.
  • Alexandra Mary (1900–1961), who married the 10th Duke of Marlborough.
  • Victoria Laura (1901–1991), who married Sir John Gilmour, 2nd Baronet.
  • Edward George John Humphrey (1903–1910), who was briefly Viscount Chelsea. He was a godson of King Edward VII and King George V (when he was Prince of Wales).

Henry passed away from cancer at the age of 40. This happened at Temple House in Theobalds Park, Hertfordshire. Sadly, his only son, Edward, also passed away from a childhood illness after his father.
