Henry Chapier (born November 14, 1933 – died January 27, 2019) was a well-known French journalist, film critic, and television presenter. He also directed a few feature films. Chapier was famous for his deep knowledge of movies and for hosting a popular TV show called Le Divan.

Henry Chapier's Early Life
Henry Chapier was born in Bucharest, Romania. His father was an international lawyer, and his mother was an actress from Austria. In 1947, when Henry was 14, he and his family left Romania.
Chapier's Career in Journalism
Henry Chapier started his career in 1958 as a film critic. He wrote for a weekly newspaper called Arts, working alongside famous director François Truffaut. Soon after, he became a freelance reporter for L'Express and won an award for best new journalist in 1959.
In the same year, he became the editor-in-chief (the main editor) for the Culture pages of Combat newspaper. He also worked as the film critic for Combat until 1974. Chapier was involved in a big discussion in 1968 about the removal of Henri Langlois from the Cinémathèque Française, which is a famous French film archive.
Henry Chapier as a Film Director
In 1970, Henry Chapier's first film won the Silver Shell award for best director at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. He remembered that the famous director Fritz Lang was in charge of the jury that gave him the award.
In 1973, Chapier directed another film called Amore. This film had music created by Vangelis Papathanassiou.
Television and Later Career
In April 1974, Henry Chapier became the editor-in-chief of the Culture pages for a new newspaper called Le Quotidien de Paris. In 1978, he joined the TV channel FR3 as a writer and commentator on film and culture. By 1981, he was one of the three main editors for the news program Soir 3.
Chapier later created his own television program called Le Divan (The Sofa), which he hosted from 1987 to 1994. On this show, he interviewed many famous people. After leaving France 3 in 1994, he became the president of the Maison européenne de la photographie (European House of Photography) in 1996. In the same year, he was a member of the jury at the famous Cannes Film Festival. He had also been a jury member for the Caméra d'Or award at Cannes in 1988.
Henry Chapier passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on January 27, 2019.
