Henry Cotterill (born March 16, 1855 – died December 2, 1943) was a talented New Zealander. He was known for playing cricket and for his long career as a lawyer. Henry played three important cricket matches for the Canterbury team. These were called first-class cricket games. He also worked as a lawyer in Christchurch for over 60 years. His law firm, Duncan Cotterill, is now one of the biggest in the South Island of New Zealand.
Early Life and Education
Henry Cotterill was born in Lyttelton in 1855. He was one of 17 children! His father, Reverend George Cotterill, became a high-ranking priest in Christchurch.
Henry and his seven brothers all went to Christ's College, Christchurch, a well-known school. Five of the Cotterill brothers became first-class cricketers.
Henry was a very bright student. He was the top school student in New Zealand during his year. He was especially good at learning different languages. He also captained his school teams in both cricket and rugby.
Cricket Career
Like his brothers, Henry was a batsman in cricket. However, he didn't have as much success in cricket as his brothers Arthur, Edward, and William. He played three first-class matches for Canterbury between 1875 and 1885.
Law Career and Legacy
After finishing his studies at Canterbury College, Henry became a qualified lawyer in 1878. In 1879, he joined Thomas Smith Duncan's law firm. This firm had started in Lyttelton in 1857.
Henry became a senior partner at the law firm, which was known as Duncan, Cotterill and Company. He worked there until he passed away. Today, the firm, now called Duncan Cotterill, has offices in several New Zealand cities. It is the largest law firm in the South Island.
Henry also helped lead Christ's College, his old school. He was on its board of governors from 1896 until 1943. He also served as the president of the Canterbury Law Society.
Personal Life
Henry Cotterill was married twice. His first wife, Nancy, sadly passed away in 1891 when she was 37 years old. In 1893, he married Adela Ronalds.
From 1936, Henry and Adela lived in Victoria Mansions in central Christchurch. Henry Cotterill died in 1943. Adela lived longer than him, and they had two sons and one daughter.
