Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Henry Green (died 6 August 1369) was an important English lawyer and judge. He held a very high position as the Chief Justice of the King's Bench from 1361 to 1365. This meant he was the main judge in one of England's most important courts. He also spoke for the House of Lords in Parliament for two years (1363–1364).

He was the son of Sir Thomas Greene and Lucy la Zouche. Early in his career, he worked for Queen Isabel and her grandson, Edward the Black Prince. In 1354, he became a judge in the Court of Common Pleas. King Edward III also made him a knight.

Sir Henry's Career in Law

Sir Henry Green had a very important career in the English legal system. As Chief Justice, he was in charge of many important legal cases. This role was like being one of the most powerful judges in the country. He helped make sure laws were followed and justice was served.

In 1365, Sir Henry faced some trouble. He was removed from his job as Chief Justice. He was also fined for some actions while in office. Even though he never worked as a judge again, he kept his large land holdings. This shows that he was still a respected person. Sir Henry married Katherine Drayton, the daughter of Sir Simon Drayton.

His Family and Legacy

Sir Henry Green died in 1369. He was buried in the church in Boughton, which is in Northamptonshire.

After he died, his lands and wealth went to his two sons, Thomas and Henry. His younger son, Henry, later became a councillor for King Richard II. Sadly, Henry the younger was executed in 1399 by the Duke of Hereford, who later became King Henry IV.

Sir Henry Green is also known for buying the village of Greens Norton in Northamptonshire. He bought it for 20 shillings, which was a good price back then. There is a special memorial for Sir Henry and his wife in the parish church at Greens Norton. This is even though they are buried in Boughton.
