Henry Marney, 1st Baron Marney (born around 1447 – died May 4, 1523) was an important politician in England during the Tudor period. He lived in Layer Marney, Essex. Henry Marney was a favorite of King Henry VIII and was the captain of the King's guard. He was also a Knight of the Garter, a special honor.

A Life of Service

Henry Marney was the son of John Marney and his wife, Joan Throgmorton. He began his career serving King Henry VII. He gained the King's trust during important battles like Bosworth and Stoke. After a rebellion led by Perkin Warbeck was stopped in 1497, Henry Marney became even more important. He was then appointed to the King's special advisory group, called the Privy Council.

When King Henry VIII became king in 1509, Henry Marney's career grew even more. He was made a Knight of the Garter, which is a very high honor. He also received many important public jobs. These included being the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Lord Privy Seal. He was also the Vice-Chamberlain of the Household and the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard.

In 1520, Henry Marney joined King Henry VIII at a famous meeting. This meeting was with King Francis I of France at a place called the Field of the Cloth of Gold. It was a very grand event meant to show off the wealth and power of both kings. In the last year of his life, Henry Marney was given another great honor. He was made the first Baron Marney, which meant he became a nobleman.

In 1515, Henry Marney started building a grand house called Layer Marney Tower. It was built in the Tudor style in Layer Marney. Today, thousands of people visit this amazing house every year. Henry Marney passed away before the house was finished. His son, John, inherited the uncompleted building. John was also the Governor of Rochester Castle. He continued the building work, but he died just two years later. John had no sons to continue the family name or to finish Layer Marney Tower.

Family Life

Henry Marney passed away in 1523. He was married two times during his life. His first wife was Thomasine, who was the daughter of Sir John Arundell. His second wife was Elizabeth (also known as Isobel). She was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Wyfold, who was a Lord Mayor of London.

With his first wife, Thomasine, Henry Marney had three children:

  • John, who became the 2nd Baron Marney.
  • Catherine, who married Edward Knyvet and later Thomas Bonham.
  • Thomas, who sadly died when he was young.
