The Henry O. Tanner House is a special old house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's important because it was the childhood home of Henry Ossawa Tanner, a famous African-American artist. From 1872 to 1888, Henry lived here. He was the first African-American artist to join the National Academy of Design, a very important art group. This house became a National Historic Landmark in 1976, which means it's a really important place in American history.

Henry O. Tanner House: A Historic Home

The Henry O. Tanner House is located in north Philadelphia. It sits on West Diamond Street, between 29th and 30th Streets. This house is a three-story brick rowhouse. It is built right next to other houses, which is common in cities.

What the House Looks Like

On the first floor, the house has a large window with two smaller windows on each side. The front door is to the left of this window. The top two floors have a special window that sticks out, called an oriel window. This part of the house is now covered in aluminum siding. The decorative parts at the top of the house have also been covered. Inside, the house has changed a lot since the Tanner family lived there.

Who Was Henry O. Tanner?

Henry Ossawa Tanner was born in 1859 and passed away in 1937. His parents moved to Philadelphia in 1866. They were living in this house by 1872. Henry's parents were well-educated and encouraged his artistic talent.

In 1880, Henry started studying art. He went to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There, he learned from a famous artist named Thomas Eakins.

Tanner's Life and Art

Henry O. Tanner found his greatest success in Paris, France. He moved there in 1891. One reason he moved was to avoid the difficult racial issues in the United States at that time.

His paintings won awards at the annual art shows in Paris, called the Salons. He won awards in both 1896 and 1897. In 1927, he became a full member of the American National Academy of Design. He was the first African-American artist to receive this honor.
