Henry William Scriven, born on August 30, 1951, is an English Anglican bishop. He has worked in different church roles across Europe and America. A bishop is a senior leader in some Christian churches, overseeing a group of churches or a specific area.
Early Life and School
Henry Scriven was born in 1951. He went to Repton School in Derbyshire, England, for his early education. After that, he studied at the University of Sheffield. He then continued his studies at St John's College, Nottingham, preparing for his church career.
Serving the Church
Henry Scriven became a priest in 1975. He first worked for four years in the Diocese of London, which is a church area in England. After that, he spent two years in the Diocese of Northern Argentina. He was there with the South American Missionary Society (SAMS), helping with their church work.
In the early 1980s, Henry Scriven and his family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, in the United States. He worked at Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock as an Assistant Rector for Education. A rector is like the main pastor of a church.
From 1984 to 1990, Scriven continued his work with SAMS in Spain. He served in the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church. Later, for five years, he was the chaplain for the British Embassy Church in Madrid. This church was part of the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe of the Church of England.
Becoming a Bishop
On March 8, 1995, Henry Scriven became a bishop. He was consecrated, which is a special ceremony, by George Carey, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time. He became a Suffragan Bishop in Europe. This means he was a bishop who helped the main bishop in the European church area. In May 1995, he also became an assistant bishop for American churches in Europe.
From 2002 to 2008, Bishop Scriven worked as an assistant bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh in the United States.
Family Life
Henry Scriven is married to Catherine. They have two children, a daughter named Anna and a son named Joel.
He is also related to Joseph Scriven, a famous Irish poet. Joseph Scriven wrote the words for the well-known hymn called "What a Friend We Have in Jesus".
