Early Life and Family
Henry Temple was the oldest son of Sir John Temple. His father was a very important politician in Ireland, serving as the Speaker of the Irish Parliament. Henry's mother was Jane Yarner.
Henry went to a famous school called Eton College from about 1689 to 1693. After that, he studied at King's College, Cambridge in 1693.
On June 10, 1703, Henry married Anne Houblon. Anne was the daughter of Abraham Houblon, who was a leader at the Bank of England.
Political Journey
In 1715, Henry Temple took on a role as a chief remembrancer for the Irish Exchequer court. This was a job he had been promised since he was a child.
On March 12, 1723, he was given two special titles: Viscount Palmerston and Baron Temple of Mount Temple. A Viscount is a noble title, ranking below an Earl.
Henry also helped Bishop Berkeley with his plans in the West Indies.
Serving in Parliament
In 1727, Henry Temple became a Member of Parliament (MP) for East Grinstead. He was elected without anyone running against him. Throughout his time in Parliament, he always supported the government in power.
He changed constituencies a few times. In 1734, he became the MP for Bossiney. Again, he was elected without opposition. In 1741, he moved to represent Weobley, also winning unopposed.
In 1740, he became the only person holding the job of chief remembrancer for the Irish Exchequer. He kept this important role for the rest of his life. Henry Temple did not run for Parliament in the 1747 election.
Home and Gardens
In 1736, Viscount Palmerston bought a large estate called Broadlands. He started to make changes to the gardens there. He wanted the gardens to look more natural, especially the area between the house and the river. He created a gentle slope down to the river.
On May 11, 1738, he married again. His second wife was Isabella Fryer. She was the widow of Sir John Fryer.
Later Years and Legacy
Henry Temple, 1st Viscount Palmerston, passed away on June 10, 1757, at the age of 84.
He had two sons with his first wife, Anne. However, neither of his sons lived longer than he did:
- Henry Temple, Lord Temple of Mount Temple (died 1740)
- Richard Temple (died 1749)
He did not have any children with his second wife, Isabella. Isabella passed away on August 11, 1762. Henry Temple was succeeded by his grandson, also named Henry.
