Henryton is a small, unincorporated community located in Carroll County, Maryland, United States. It sits right along the Patapsco River. People believe the community was named after Henry DeVries, a farmer and landowner from the 1800s.

Henryton's History

Who Was Henry DeVries?

Henry DeVries was the son of Christian DeVries, an immigrant from the Netherlands. Christian came to America in 1802. He first worked at a paper mill in Elkridge, Maryland. In 1809, he bought a flour mill and some land nearby. This old mill can still be seen today.

Henry DeVries likely worked at his father's mill, which later became a paper mill. After that, he started a very large farm. This farm probably covered a big part of the mountain where Henryton is located.

Exploring Old Ruins

Many old ruins have been found in the Henryton area. These include parts of homes, old tools like hammers and nails, and what might be grave markers or barn foundations. An old road was also found that could take people around the mountain to where Henryton is now.

This road first appeared on a map of Carroll County around 1862. It was last seen on a U.S. topographic map from the 1960s. Since the DeVries family lived there since 1809, the road was likely used much earlier.

What Can You See Today?

If you visit the area, you can still see parts of this old road. It starts near the intersection of Marriottsville Road 2 and Arrington Road. The road follows the edge of the mountain, high above Marriottsville Road 2.

Some parts of the road were lost due to mining in the 1900s. However, it continues for a few hundred feet before disappearing. Along this path, you can find more ruins. Some maps from the 1860s show a house belonging to Henry DeVries in this area.

Other ruins, possibly a graveyard or another barn, have been found nearby. It's not known exactly when these old buildings became empty and fell into ruins.
