It's called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a settled area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data, even though it's not an officially incorporated town. In 2020, about 32,582 people lived here.

History of Eldersburg
Eldersburg got its name from a man named John Elder. He received a special land gift from the King of England a long time ago.
The community first had a post office in April 1850. It was originally in a different county, Anne Arundel County. Later, in 1851, Howard County was formed. The post office then moved to Carroll County in 1871.
When it first started, the name was spelled "Eldersburgh." But in December 1894, they decided to make it shorter and simpler, changing it to "Eldersburg."
Two important old buildings in Eldersburg are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Moses Brown House, added in 1980, and the Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, added in 1984. These places help us remember the community's past.
Where is Eldersburg?
Eldersburg is located in the southeastern part of Carroll County. It shares its borders with Baltimore County to the east and Howard County to the south. The town of Sykesville is also nearby.
The main part of Eldersburg is where two important roads meet: Maryland Route 26 (also known as Liberty Road) and Maryland Route 32 (Sykesville Road).
- Maryland Route 26 goes east about 20 miles to Baltimore, a big city. It also goes west about 28 miles to Frederick.
- Maryland Route 32 goes north about 15 miles to Westminster, which is the main town of Carroll County. It goes south about 20 miles to Columbia.

Christianity is the main religion in Eldersburg. The Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the oldest Methodist churches in the United States. Methodism, a type of Protestant Christianity, actually started in Carroll County.
Judaism
Eldersburg is also home to the Chabad Jewish Center of Carroll County, which is an Orthodox synagogue. It opened in 2013. Before this, Carroll County did not have a synagogue for many years. There is also the Eldersburg Jewish Congregation, which is a Conservative synagogue.

- The Eldersburg-Westminster TrailBlazer (Blue Route) connects Eldersburg to Westminster.
If you want to go to downtown Baltimore, you can drive about 20 minutes to the Owings Mills station of the Baltimore Metro SubwayLink. This subway station is in nearby Owings Mills in Baltimore County.
There isn't a direct bus connection between Eldersburg and nearby Randallstown in Baltimore County.
