Herbert Island is a cool island found in the Aleutian Islands, which are a long chain of islands in Alaska. It's part of a smaller group called the Islands of Four Mountains. The island has a special name in the native Aleut language: Aleut: Chiĝulax̂.

Herbert Island is shaped a bit like a circle. It's about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) wide. The whole island is actually a big volcano called Herbert Volcano!

Exploring Herbert Island

Herbert Island is located in a very interesting part of the world. It's quite close to another island called Chuginadak Island, with only a narrow passage of water, the Chuginadak Pass, separating them. This passage is about 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) wide. Another island, Yunaska Island, is about 16 miles (26 kilometers) to the west and southwest of Herbert Island.

The Volcano on Herbert Island

The most important feature of Herbert Island is its volcano. Herbert Volcano stands tall at about 4,200 feet (1,280 meters). What's really special about this volcano is its huge caldera. A caldera is like a giant bowl-shaped dip that forms when the top of a volcano collapses after a big eruption. Herbert Volcano's caldera is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) wide, making it one of the largest in the Aleutian Islands!

Even though it's a volcano, there have been no recorded eruptions from Herbert Volcano. This means it hasn't erupted in a very long time, at least not since people started keeping records.

Size of the Island

Herbert Island is roughly 8.95 kilometers (5.56 miles) long and 9.14 kilometers (5.68 miles) wide. Its size and the presence of the large volcano make it a unique part of the Aleutian chain.
