Herbert Morley (born April 2, 1616 – died September 29, 1667) was an important English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making body in England, for many years. He also fought as a leader for the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War. Later, he was even in charge of the famous Tower of London.
Early Life and Education
Herbert Morley was born in 1616. His father was Robert Morley from Glynde Place in Sussex. His mother was Susanna Hodgson. Herbert went to school in Lewes. After that, he studied at Cambridge University starting in 1632. He also studied law at the Inner Temple in London from 1634.
A Leader in the Civil War
Morley became a Member of Parliament for Lewes in 1640. This was just before the Long Parliament began. When the English Civil War started, he joined the Parliamentary army. He became a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer.
Morley was very important in Sussex. He helped gather soldiers and manage property for the Parliament. He led the Parliamentarian army to victory at the Battle of Muster Green. This battle happened in December 1642 near Haywards Heath in Sussex.
He was asked to be one of the judges for the King, but he chose not to take part.
His Political Career
After the Civil War, Herbert Morley continued his work in politics. He was a member of the Council of State from 1650 to 1653. This council helped govern England.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Sussex in 1654. He also represented Rye in Parliament. He continued to be elected for Sussex and Lewes in later Parliaments. In 1659, he was again part of the Council of State. He also worked as an Admiralty Commissioner, helping with naval affairs.
Later Years
In 1660, Morley was still a member of the Council of State. He was elected as an MP for Rye in the Convention Parliament. He did not want to negotiate for the King's return to power. However, he was able to get a pardon in 1660. This meant he would not be punished for his actions during the Civil War.
He was re-elected as an MP for Rye in 1661. He served in the Cavalier Parliament until he passed away. Herbert Morley died in 1667 when he was 51 years old.
