Herbert "Hacki" Wimmer (born 9 November 1944) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder and was known for his amazing energy. He won many important titles with his club, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and also with the German national team.

Playing for Clubs

Herbert Wimmer started his football journey at a smaller club called Borussia Brand. This club was near the city of Aachen.

Time at Borussia Mönchengladbach

From 1966 to 1978, Wimmer played for Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played in 366 matches in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. During this time, he scored 51 goals.

With Borussia Mönchengladbach, he helped his team win many big competitions:

  • They won the German national championship five times (in 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976, and 1977).
  • They also won the German Cup in 1973.
  • In 1975, they won the UEFA Cup, which is a major European club competition.

Wimmer's Role on the Field

Herbert Wimmer first started as a forward, which is a player who scores goals. But at Mönchengladbach, his main job changed. He became a midfielder who focused on defending. His role was to help protect the team's star player, Günter Netzer, who was a creative midfielder.

Wimmer was famous for his incredible energy and how long he could keep running. People even called him the Iron Lung because he seemed to never get tired! He was known as a player who always had lots of energy. He was a "destroyer" type of midfielder. This means his main job was to win the ball back from the other team. Once he got the ball, he would pass it to his teammates to start new attacks.

Playing for His Country

Between 1968 and 1976, Herbert Wimmer also played for the West Germany national team. He played in 36 matches and scored four goals for his country.
