Herbert "Hacki" Wimmer (born on November 9, 1944) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder. Wimmer won many big titles with his club, Borussia Mönchengladbach. These included five national championships and two UEFA Cups. He also helped Germany win the 1974 World Cup and the UEFA Euro 1972.
Club Career
Herbert Wimmer began his football journey at a smaller club called Borussia Brand. This club was near the city of Aachen.
From 1966 to 1978, Wimmer played for Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played in 366 matches in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. During this time, he scored 51 goals.
With Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wimmer achieved great success. He won five German national championships. These wins happened in 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976, and 1977. He also won the German Cup in 1973. In 1975, his team won the UEFA Cup, a major European competition.
Wimmer started as a forward, which is a player who scores goals. But at Mönchengladbach, his main job changed. He became a defensive midfielder. His role was to protect the defense and help the team's star player, Günter Netzer. Netzer was a creative midfielder who focused on attacking.
Wimmer was known for his amazing energy and stamina. People even nicknamed him the Iron Lung. This nickname showed that he never seemed to get tired. He was a player who could run all game long. A football writer named Jonathan Wilson described Wimmer as a "destroyer." This type of midfielder mainly helps win the ball back from opponents. Then, they pass the ball to other players to start attacks.
International Career
Between 1968 and 1976, Herbert Wimmer also played for the West Germany national team. He played in 36 matches for his country. During these games, he scored four goals.
With West Germany, Wimmer won two very important tournaments. In 1972, he helped his team win the European Football Championship. He even scored the second goal in the final match. West Germany won that game 3–0 against the USSR.
Two years later, in 1974, Wimmer was part of the team that won the 1974 FIFA World Cup. This is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world. He played in two matches during that World Cup.
