Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Herjólfr Bárðarson was an important Norse settler during the early days of Greenland's history. He was one of the first people to move there from Iceland, helping to establish the first European settlements. His son, Bjarni Herjólfsson, is famous for being the first European to see the American continent in 986 AD, even though he didn't mean to!

Herjólfr's Life and Journey

Herjólfr Bárðarson lived in Iceland at a place called Drepstokki. His father was Bárð Herjólfsson, and he was married to a woman named Þorgerður. Their son, Bjarni, later became a famous explorer.

Herjólfr was a loyal follower of Eiríkur rauði, a well-known Viking leader. In 985 AD, Erik the Red led a group of settlers from Iceland to Greenland. They set out with 25 Viking ships, hoping to find new lands to live on.

Settling in Greenland

The journey across the sea was very difficult. Out of the 25 ships that left Iceland, only 14 managed to reach Greenland safely. Herjólfr Bárðarson's ship was one of the lucky ones that made it.

According to an old Icelandic book called Landnámabók, Herjólfr and his family settled in a place they named Herjólfsfjörð. This area was on the Herjólfsnes peninsula, which is south of Brattahlíð. Today, this area is near a modern town called Narsarmijit (also known as Friedrichsthal), which is south of Nanortalik.

Herjólfr Bárðarson played a key role in the early Norse settlements in Greenland. His family helped to build new communities in this distant land.
