Hermann Edward Hasse, a famous lichenologist.

Hermann Edward Hasse (born January 12, 1836 – died October 29, 1915) was an American scientist who studied lichens. Scientists who study lichens are called lichenologists. He wrote many important books and articles about his discoveries.

Who Was Hermann Edward Hasse?

Hermann Edward Hasse was a dedicated scientist. He spent his life learning about lichens. Lichens are unique living things. They are a partnership between a fungus and an algae or cyanobacteria.

What Did He Study?

Hasse focused his research on lichens. He wrote two very important books about them. He also published many articles. These writings helped other scientists learn more about lichens. His work added a lot to the field of cryptogamic botany. This is the study of plants that do not produce seeds or flowers.

How Was He Honored?

Two different living things were named after Hermann Edward Hasse. This is a special way to honor a scientist.

  • Hassea is a group, or genus, of fungi. These fungi belong to a larger group called Dothideomycetes.
  • Lecidea hassei is a type of lichen. This special lichen grows inside solid rock. Scientists call this an endolithic lichen.

Where Did He Work?

Hasse did most of his research in southern California. He explored many places there to find and study lichens. He also communicated with other important scientists. These included William Gilson Farlow, who studied plants like mosses and ferns, and George Knox Merrill, another lichenologist.
