Hermann von Eichhorn (born February 13, 1848 – died July 30, 1918) was an important German military leader. He was a Prussian officer who became a Field Marshal during World War I. A Field Marshal is a very high rank in the army. He received the Pour le Mérite award, which was one of the highest honors in Germany at that time.

Early Life and Military Career

Hermann von Eichhorn was born in Breslau, which is now part of Poland. His father was a politician. Hermann joined the Prussian Army in 1866.

Early Wars

He fought in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. He also took part in the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871. During this war, he earned the Iron Cross second class. This was an important military medal.

Rising Through the Ranks

Eichhorn slowly moved up in the army. In 1897, he became the chief of staff for the VI Army Corps in Breslau. From 1901 to 1904, he led the 9th Division. After that, he commanded the XVIII Army Corps until 1912.

World War I Service

When World War I began, Eichhorn was recovering from an accident. However, he was able to join the fighting in 1915. He took part in the Battle of Soissons.

Leading the 10th Army

On January 21, 1915, he became the commanding general of the 10th Army. This army fought in the big Battle of the Masurian Lakes in February 1915. Later that year, his army captured important cities like Kovno, Grodno, and Olita. They continued to advance into Russia.

High Honors and Promotions

Hermann von Eichhorn received the Pour le Mérite award on August 18, 1915. He then received the oak leaves to this award on September 28, 1915. These were very special honors for his bravery and leadership. On December 18, 1917, he was promoted to Field Marshal. This was the highest rank he could achieve.

Commanding Army Groups

In 1916, Eichhorn also became the supreme commander of Army Group Eichhorn. He led this group until March 1918. After that, he became the supreme commander of Army Group Kyiv. He was also made the military governor of Ukraine.

Death

Hermann von Eichhorn was killed in Kyiv on July 30, 1918. A person named Boris Donskoy threw a bomb at his carriage. He is buried in the Invalidenfriedhof cemetery in Berlin.

Legacy and Recognition

Hermann von Eichhorn received many awards during his life. These included the Order of the Red Eagle and the Ludwig Order. He also received an honorary degree from the University of Berlin.

German Emperor Wilhelm II honored him by naming one of the towers of Malbork Castle after him. A street in Berlin, called Eichhornstraße, was also named after him during his lifetime.
