A Look at Hermleigh's Past
Hermleigh began in 1907. Two men, R. C. Herm and Harry W. Harlin, gave land for the new town. It was near a small community called Wheat. People wanted to name the new town "Hermlin," combining the landowners' names. However, postal officials said this was too similar to Hamlin, a nearby town. They decided on "Hermleigh" instead, and the post office opened soon after.
The Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific Railway built tracks through Hermleigh. This caused people from Wheat to move to the new town.
Growth and Changes
In 1911, the Santa Fe Railroad also reached Hermleigh. This helped the town grow into a place where ranchers and cotton farmers could ship their goods and trade. A school opened in 1913. By the late 1910s, Hermleigh even had its own newspaper, the Hermleigh Herald.
For a short time in the late 1910s, Hermleigh changed its name to Foch. This was to honor Ferdinand Foch, a French military leader from World War I. But the town soon went back to its original name. Hermleigh continued to do well until the early 1930s, when the Great Depression slowed its growth.
Even with the challenges of the Depression, Hermleigh stayed stable for most of the 20th century. By 1980, over 700 people lived there. However, by 1990, the population dropped to about 200, and some businesses closed. Surprisingly, the community grew again in the 1990s, reaching 393 people by the 2000 Census.
