Becoming President of Bolivia
Hernando Siles Reyes started a political group called the Nationalist Party. Later, he joined a part of the Republican Party that was already in power. In 1926, the current president, Bautista Saavedra, chose Hernando Siles to be the next president.
Siles ran for president with Bautista Saavedra's brother, Abdón Saavedra, as his vice-president. They won the elections. Hernando Siles Reyes became president in August 1926.
A Strong Leader
Soon after becoming president, Hernando Siles became very popular. He was seen as one of Bolivia's most inspiring politicians. He even disagreed with the powerful ex-President Bautista Saavedra. Siles sent Bautista and his brother (who was Siles's own vice-president) out of the country.
Challenges During His Presidency
Even though he was popular, President Siles faced many problems. The world economy had a big crash in 1929. This caused many economic difficulties for Bolivia.
Rising Tensions with Paraguay
During his time as president, there were also growing problems with Bolivia's neighbor, Paraguay. These problems would later lead to a big conflict called the Chaco War.
End of His Term
To deal with the country's problems, President Siles tried to stay in office longer than his term allowed. This made many of his opponents very upset. They started planning to remove him from power.
On May 28, 1930, Hernando Siles decided to resign. He left his government in charge. However, his cabinet was soon overthrown by General Carlos Blanco. New elections were held in 1931.
Life After the Presidency
After leaving office, Hernando Siles lived the rest of his life outside of Bolivia. He passed away in Lima, Peru, in 1942. He was 60 years old.
His Family's Legacy
Hernando Siles Reyes had two sons who also became presidents of Bolivia.
- His older son, Hernán Siles Zuazo, was president from 1956 to 1960. He served again from 1982 to 1985.
- His younger son, Luis Adolfo Siles Salinas, was acting president for a few months in 1969.
