Exploring Herve's Villages
Herve isn't just one big city; it's made up of several smaller towns and villages. In 1977, many of these smaller areas joined together to form the larger municipality we know today. This is called a municipal merger.
Villages in Herve
Today, the Herve municipality includes 11 main villages. These are Battice, Bolland, Bruyères, Chaineux, Charneux, Grand-Rechain, Herve (the main town), José, Julémont, Manaihant, and Xhendelesse. There are also even smaller places, like Hacboister, which is part of the Bolland district.
Discovering Herve's Historic Buildings
Herve has some really old and interesting buildings that show its history.
Church of St John the Baptist
One important building is the Church of St John the Baptist. It was built a long time ago in the 17th century. The church's tall tower is even older, dating back to the 13th century! It stands about 49 meters high.
The church's bell tower is quite special because its top part, called a spire, is a bit crooked. This unique shape helps it stand strong against the wind. Because it's so old and unique, the church was named a historic monument in 1934.
Bolland Castle
Another cool old building is the Château de Bolland. This castle was originally built in the Middle Ages. However, much of what you see today was rebuilt in the 17th century. It's a great example of how buildings change over hundreds of years!
