Herwald Ramsbotham (born March 6, 1887 – died January 30, 1971) was a British politician. He was also known as "The Viscount Soulbury," a special title given to him later in life. He served as a government minister in Britain from 1931 to 1941. Later, he became the Governor-General of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1949 to 1954. He received many important awards for his service, including the Military Cross for bravery.

Early Political Career
Herwald Ramsbotham began his career in politics as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the Conservative Party. He was first elected in 1929.
Serving as a Minister
Ramsbotham held several important jobs in the British government. These roles are called "ministerial" positions.
- Minister of Pensions: From 1936 to 1939, he was in charge of pensions. This meant he helped manage payments to people who were retired or had been injured.
- First Commissioner of Works: From 1939 to 1940, he oversaw public buildings and parks. This role was about managing government properties.
- President of the Board of Education: From 1940 to 1941, he was responsible for education. This was a very important time, as World War II had just begun.
Governor-General of Ceylon
After World War II, Herwald Ramsbotham took on a new role. He became the Governor-General of Ceylon. This was a country that was part of the British Commonwealth.
Role in Ceylon
As Governor-General, he was the representative of the British monarch in Ceylon. He played a key role in the country's transition to full independence. Ceylon became fully independent in 1948, just before he took office. He served in this position from 1949 to 1954.
Later Life
After his time in Ceylon, Herwald Ramsbotham retired from public service. He passed away in 1971 at the age of 83.
