What is a Hetman?
The title "Hetman" has a long history in Ukraine. It was first used for the leaders of the Cossack Hetmanate. The Cossacks were a group of brave warriors and free people who lived in Ukraine. Their leader, the Hetman, was often elected by the Cossacks themselves.
History of the Hetman Title
Early Hetmans and the Cossack State
The position of Hetman first appeared in 1648. This was during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, a major rebellion led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky. He became the first Hetman of the Cossack Hetmanate, which was a Cossack state in Ukraine.
For a long time, the Hetman was chosen by the Cossacks. But later, in the late 1700s, the Russian government ended this position. This happened as Russia expanded its lands towards the Black Sea.
The Hetman in 1918
The title of Hetman was brought back in 1918 by Pavlo Skoropadskyi. He was a descendant of an earlier Hetman, Ivan Skoropadsky. On April 29, 1918, a new law was announced. This law created the legal basis for the new Hetman position.
Pavlo Skoropadskyi then led Ukraine as the Hetman. He turned Ukraine into the Ukrainian State. This state was protected by the Central Powers, a group of countries during World War I. During his time as Hetman, he also worked to remove forces from Soviet Russia.
End of the Hetman's Rule
Pavlo Skoropadskyi's rule as Hetman ended on December 14, 1918. This happened after an uprising led by the Directorate of Ukraine. He gave up his title and transferred power to the government. After this, he went to live in Germany.
Later Efforts to Bring Back the Hetman
After the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was formed, some members of the Skoropadsky family started a movement. They hoped to bring back the Hetman's office and create a royal family for Ukraine.
