About the "Hey Santa!" Album
Hey Santa! is a Christmas album that was released in 1993. It appeared on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart on Christmas Day that year. Even though it didn't become a huge hit, it still reached number 116 on the Top Pop Albums chart and number 25 on the Top Holiday Albums chart.
The Songs on the Album
The album has twelve songs. Eleven of these are classic Christmas songs that many people know and love. The twelfth song is the main one, called "Hey Santa!", which was written by Carnie and Wendy Wilson along with Jack Kugell.
The song "Hey Santa!" tells the story of someone wishing that Santa would bring their loved one home for Christmas. It's a sweet song about being together during the holidays.
The "Hey Santa!" Single
The record company, SBK Records, released "Hey Santa!" as a single. A single is a song released on its own, usually to get played on the radio. This single also included their version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". It was released on a cassette tape and a green vinyl record. The song "Hey Santa!" became quite popular on the Billboard Top Adult Contemporary chart, reaching number 22. It also did very well on another chart, often seen as number 101 on the main Hot 100 chart. Even though the album wasn't a huge seller, the song "Hey Santa!" is still played on the radio every Christmas season!
Family Voices on the Album
A special part of the "Hey Santa!" song is the backing vocals. Carl Wilson, who was Carnie and Wendy's uncle and a founding member of the famous band The Beach Boys, sings along in the background.
The album also includes a recording from 1976 of the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". This version is very special because it features The Beach Boys singing backup. Plus, many of the Beach Boys' children are also singing on it, like Matthew and Adam Jardine, Hailey and Christian Love, and Jonah and Justyn Wilson. It's truly a family affair!
Album Reissues and Sales
Years later, in 1999, Hey Santa! was re-released. This new version had the same songs and was available on both CD and cassette. As of 2012, the album had sold over 138,000 copies in the U.S.
Other Christmas Albums by the Wilsons
Carnie and Wendy Wilson have continued to make Christmas music. In 2007, Carnie Wilson released her own Christmas album called Christmas with Carnie. It included new versions of some of the same songs from Hey Santa!. Then, in 2010, the group Wilson Phillips got back together and released their own Christmas album, Christmas in Harmony. This album also featured new versions of some familiar holiday tunes.
