Heythuysen (pronounced like "HITE-hoy-zen") is a lovely village located in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. It's part of the Limburg province. This village is known for its interesting history and charming buildings. In 2021, about 6,545 people lived there.

Heythuysen's Past: A Quick Look

Heythuysen was first mentioned a very long time ago, in the year 1383. Its name, "Heythusen," means "houses on the heath." Imagine houses built on open, grassy land!

The village was important because it was on a main road. This road connected the cities of Venlo and Antwerp. It also sat between two small streams, the Bevelandse beek and the Tungelroyse beek. In 1243, Heythuysen became a border town for the County of Horne. Later, in 1680, it became an independent heerlijkheid. This meant it had its own local lord and some special rights.

The St Nicolaas Church

The village has a beautiful Catholic church called the St Nicolaas Church. It has three aisles and was built shortly after the year 1504. Imagine how old that is! The tall, pointed tower you see today was added much later, in 1847. It was built in a style called Gothic Revival, which means it looks like old Gothic churches. The church was made even bigger in 1927.

Becoming Part of Leudal

In 1840, Heythuysen was a small place with about 275 people. For many years, it was its own separate municipality (like a small local government area). It even included other nearby villages like Baexem, Grathem, and Kelpen-Oler. However, on January 1, 2007, Heythuysen became part of a larger municipality called Leudal.
