Where is Hi Vista?
Hi Vista is found in the Antelope Valley, which is in the southwestern part of the Mojave Desert. People often call this area the "High Desert" because it's quite high up.
Many other places are nearby. Edwards Air Force Base is about 22 miles (35 km) north. Adelanto is 31 miles (50 km) to the east. Lake Los Angeles is 11 miles (18 km) south. Lancaster is 21 miles (34 km) to the west.
A Look at Hi Vista's Past
Hi-Vista was started around 1930. The wife of the person who developed the area gave it its name. She chose "Hi-Vista" because of the amazing views of the San Bernardino and Sierra Madres mountains.
Wildflower Celebrations
In the past, Hi-Vista was famous for its spring wildflower events. For example, in 1933, visitors could see many kinds of flowers. These included coreopsis, hyacinth, lupine, and purple sage. People would also enjoy lunch and talks from the Hi-Vista Improvement Association.
The 1964 event was expected to show 150 different types of flowers. It also featured a ham dinner and fun turtle (tortoise) races!
Fun Things to See and Do
Hi Vista is home to some interesting places. You can visit Saddleback Butte State Park. There is also the Butte Valley Wildflower Sanctuary.
The "Kill Bill" Church
The Calvary Baptist Church in Hi Vista is a famous spot. It was used as a filming location for the movies Kill Bill Vol. I & II. These films were directed by Quentin Tarantino. The church also appeared in the music video for "Road to Nowhere" by the band Talking Heads.
Phacelia Wildlife Sanctuary
The Phacelia Wildlife Sanctuary is another special place. Los Angeles County started this sanctuary in 1961. It protects local plants and animals. You can find creosote bushes and small Joshua trees there. Many animals live here too, like zebra-tailed lizards and roadrunners.
