Hickman is a small community in Stanislaus County, California, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is a community that is counted for the census but is not officially a city.
In 2020, about 604 people lived in Hickman. This was a change from 641 people in 2010. Hickman is part of the larger Modesto area. The town has a long history, dating back to the gold rush days. It was once a stop on a train line, and the old train station is still there. You might also know Hickman because radio station KLOC broadcasts from three towers located here.

History of Hickman
The first important person to settle in the Hickman area was Charles Dallas. He arrived around 1849 or 1850. In fact, early maps sometimes called the area "Dallas."
Charles Dallas's daughter, Mary, married Louis McLean Hickman in 1860. Louis Hickman was a very important person. He even served as the mayor of nearby Stockton, California in 1869. In the 1860s, Louis Hickman owned a hardware store. He also had a huge ranch, about 11,000 acres! On his ranch, he grew many different crops. These included grains, hay, olives, figs, oranges, and grapes.
In 1891, the railroad came to Hickman. This led to the building of large brick buildings for storing grain. The Southern Pacific railroad company decided to rename the area in 1891. They named it "Hickman" after Louis Hickman.
Life in Hickman
Life in Hickman often centers around its school. The Hickman Charter School District teaches students from kindergarten through 8th grade. After 8th grade, students travel to other schools nearby for high school.
The Hickman Charter School is quite popular. It has more students than the town's population. Some students even travel from as far away as Berkeley, California, to attend this school.

Hickman is a country town, so farming is a big part of its economy. You will see many almond orchards in the area. There are also several dairies, which are farms where milk is produced.
Foster Farms has a dairy here. They also have farms that raise chickens. There is a large nursery that grows trees, including beautiful redwood trees. Another farm raises roosters.
Besides farming, Hickman has other types of businesses. These include a company that makes mining equipment. There is also a large plant nursery, a welding shop, and two country stores. You can find a cabinet maker, a music education company, and the Hickman Hat Rack Co. here too.
Hydroelectric Power
Hickman has something special: a unique hydroelectric dam on one of its irrigation canals. This dam uses the power of moving water in the canal to create electricity.
