Higginsport is a small village in Ohio, United States. It is located in Lewis Township, Brown County, right next to the Ohio River. In 2020, about 213 people lived there.

History of Higginsport

Higginsport was founded by a man named Col. Robert Higgins. He was an officer in the American Revolutionary War, which was a big war for America's independence. For his service, he received 1,000 acres of land in Ohio.

In 1799, Col. Higgins and his family moved to this land. They built a small cabin near where Higginsport is today. On September 1, 1804, he started planning a new community called White Haven. However, this community did not grow and was later abandoned.

Col. Higgins tried again on February 28, 1816. He replanned the community with 114 lots and renamed it Higginsport. The streets mostly followed his first plan. He also gave land for a cemetery, a public park, and a special area called White Oak Bottom.

The first church in Higginsport was started in 1818. By 1819, there were six cabins and six people, but the village was growing. A small store opened in 1828 and got bigger in 1832. In 1835, the first brick house was built by Jesse Dugan, who owned the store. This house was still standing in 2013.

The Higginsport Post Office opened on January 24, 1829. Mr. Roberts, the town tailor, was the first Post Master. Two more stores opened in 1835 and 1839.

By 1880, the population of Higginsport had grown to 862 people. In 1883, it was described as a "thriving village." It had many businesses, including five general stores, two drug stores, two tin shops, and two hotels. There were also blacksmiths, a wagon-maker, a grist mill, and a distillery.

A special type of tobacco called White burley tobacco was first grown near Higginsport in 1864. By the 1880s, this tobacco was very important to the town's economy. There were 17 tobacco warehouses and 32 different tobacco buyers. They shipped about 2 million pounds of tobacco each year down the Ohio River to New Orleans.

Over many years, fires and floods have damaged many of the old homes and businesses along the riverfront.
