What is High Falls?
High Falls is a very tall waterfall. It's 125 feet (38 meters) high! The water flows over a wide, sloped rock face. This makes it look like a giant slide for the river. The water usually stays on the rock as it rushes down. Sometimes, the water even jumps a few feet into the air!
High Falls is one of four main waterfalls on the Little River. The other three are Triple Falls, Hooker Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. All these waterfalls are found within the DuPont State Forest.
History of High Falls
People living nearby have known about High Falls for a long time. In the 1990s, the land where the waterfall is located was owned by a company called DuPont. Later, DuPont sold this land to the State of North Carolina.
As DuPont finished cleaning up different areas, these parts became open to everyone. Now, High Falls is part of the huge DuPont State Forest. This forest is over 10,000 acres big!
Visiting High Falls
You can visit High Falls and see its beauty up close! The best way to start is by parking at the Hooker Falls parking area. From there, you can hike the Triple Falls / High Falls Trail. This trail is about 1 mile long.
As you hike, you'll pass a great spot to view Triple Falls. Keep going, and you'll reach High Falls. There are a few places to see the falls. One spot is an overlook that lets you see the whole waterfall. Another view is from a covered bridge. This bridge passes close to the top of the falls on Buck Forest Road.
If you have a disability, you might be able to get to the falls by vehicle. You should contact the DuPont State Forest directly for more information. They can tell you about special access options.
