Hooker Falls: A Cool Waterfall to Visit
How Hooker Falls Was Formed
Hooker Falls is part of the Little River. This river flows right through DuPont State Forest. It's one of four important waterfalls you can find along the Little River in this area. The other three are High Falls, Triple Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. These waterfalls were formed over many years by the river carving its way through the rocks.
A Bit of History: Movies and Mills
People living nearby have known about Hooker Falls for a long time. It was named after Edmund Hooker, who ran a mill near the falls in the late 1800s. Back then, it was actually called Mill Shoals Falls.
You might even recognize Hooker Falls from a famous movie! It was featured in the 1992 film Last of the Mohicans. In the movie, characters go over the falls in canoes.
In the 1990s, the land that is now DuPont State Forest was sold to the State of North Carolina. As different parts of the forest were cleaned up, they were opened for everyone to visit and enjoy.
Planning Your Visit to Hooker Falls
Visiting Hooker Falls is quite easy and fun! You can park your car at the special Hooker Falls parking area. From there, it's a short walk of about 1/4 mile (roughly 400 meters) along the Hooker Falls Trail.
