Highbury, which was first known as Wolwolling, is a small town. It is located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. You can find it along the Great Southern Highway. The town sits between Narrogin and Wagin. In 2006, a count showed that 493 people lived in Highbury.

Highbury's History

How Highbury Started

Highbury began because of the Great Southern Railway. A special stop for trains, called a siding, was built here in 1894. The town was first named Wolwolling. This name came from Wolwolling Pool. This pool is a permanent water spot in the Arthur River. It is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) to the south-southeast.

Changing the Name

The town was officially named Wolwolling in 1905. But the local group, called the progress association, had a problem. They said the name was too much like other places. This caused mail and goods to get lost. So, a public meeting was held to pick a new name. People voted on Highbury, Scottdale, and Linton. Linton was the most popular choice. However, the town was officially renamed Highbury in August 1906.

Early School Days

The Wolwolling State School opened its doors in 1904. A permanent school building and homes for teachers were built in 1905. This school helped educate children in the area for many years. It continued to operate until 1946.

Highbury Today

What You See Now

Today, Highbury is mostly a small stop along the highway. It has a store, a tavern (a type of pub), and a community hall. These places are used by people living in the farming areas nearby. Highbury is part of the southern Shire of Narrogin.

Community Efforts

A group called the Highbury District Community Council helps the area. They talk to the local government about issues affecting Highbury. In 2006, this group had a great idea. They successfully suggested building a war memorial. This memorial is next to the hall. It honors people from the district who fought and died in wars overseas.
