Company History
In 2018, Barack and Michelle Obama started Higher Ground to create movies and TV shows for Netflix. Their goal was to share stories from people of many different backgrounds and experiences.
Michelle Obama said, "I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others."
In 2019, the company partnered with Spotify to create podcasts. Their first one was The Michelle Obama Podcast, which came out in 2020. In June 2022, Higher Ground moved its podcast deal from Spotify to Audible, an Amazon company that sells audiobooks and podcasts.
In March 2025, the company announced a new podcast called “IMO” hosted by Michelle Obama and her brother, Craig Robinson.
