History of Hill City
Hill City officially became a city in 1910. It separated from the nearby Hill Lake Township in 1911. The city's post office opened its doors in 1901.
The town grew thanks to shipping things like wooden barrels, forest products, and farm goods. A special house in Hill City, the 1910 National Woodenware Company Superintendent's Residence, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building.
Geography and Nature
Hill City covers about 1.52 square miles (3.94 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a smaller part being water.
The city sits right by Hill Lake. This lake was formed by glacial ice long ago. It's about 2 miles (3.2 km) long and usually about 0.25 miles (0.4 km) wide. At the south end of the lake, there's a big hill called Quadna Mountain. This "mountain" is actually where Hill City gets its name! The Hill River and Morrison Brook also flow nearby. Hill Lake is quite deep, about 50 feet (15 meters).
