Hilliard is a small, unincorporated community located in the northern part of Butler County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.
Where is Hilliard?
Hilliard is situated on Missouri Route W. It's about three miles north of the city of Poplar Bluff. The community sits on the eastern edge of the Black River floodplain. It is about 361 feet above sea level.
Another community called Wilby is located about three miles to the north-northwest of Hilliard. It is also along the Black River. The Missouri Pacific Railway runs along the eastern side of Hilliard. This railway follows the edge of the Black River floodplain. A small body of water, Lake Locloma, is just west of the Black River, near Route W.
A Look at Hilliard's History
The area known as Hilliard got its start as a community many years ago. A post office was opened in Hilliard in 1884. This post office served the community for over 20 years. It eventually closed down in 1906.
The name "Hilliard" actually came from a phrase: "Hill's Yard." This was a railroad yard that belonged to a person named George W. Hill. So, the community was named after his railroad yard.
