The Hispaniolan giant tree frog (Osteopilus vastus), also called the Hispaniola tree frog, is a large frog that lives in trees. It is found only on the island of Hispaniola, which includes both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. These amazing frogs are part of the Hylidae family, known for their tree-dwelling habits.
Where Do Hispaniolan Giant Tree Frogs Live?
These special frogs are found in different places across the island of Hispaniola. They mostly live in moist broadleaf forests, which are forests with many trees that keep their leaves all year. You can also find them in farm areas like cacao and coffee plantations, and even in pastures.
They love to climb high, sometimes up to 15 meters (about 50 feet) into the tree canopy! These frogs are often found near creeks and streams. Male frogs will call out from trees hanging over the water to attract mates. The female frogs also lay their eggs in the running water of these streams.
Protecting the Hispaniolan Giant Tree Frog
Sadly, the Hispaniolan giant tree frog is facing threats. Its home is shrinking because of habitat loss. This happens when streams become polluted or damaged, and when forests are cut down (called deforestation). Protecting these forests and streams is very important to help these unique frogs survive and thrive on Hispaniola.
