The History of Diving Museum is a cool place in Islamorada, Florida, which is part of the sunny Florida Keys. This museum shows off lots of old and interesting gear used for diving underwater. You can see many different diving helmets and other amazing items that tell the story of how people have explored the ocean depths over time.

The Museum's Story
This special museum was started by Joe and Sally Bauer. They were doctors who had retired. One day, they bought a diving helmet, and it sparked their interest in diving and the ocean. They began writing scientific articles about the ocean. Soon, they had collected many amazing diving artifacts.
In the year 2000, they started turning an old storage building in Islamorada into a museum. It first opened its doors to visitors in 2005. By the next year, it was fully open and ready for everyone to explore. Joe Bauer passed away in 2007, but Sally continued their important work.
What You Can See: Exhibits
As of 2014, the museum had 13 different exhibits. These exhibits tell the long story of diving. You can learn about diving history from thousands of years ago, like a tale from the ancient Epic of Gilgamesh.
Diving Pioneers
The museum also features famous diving pioneers. These are people who helped invent new ways to explore underwater. You can learn about inventors like Edmond Halley and Karl Heinrich Klingert. They made important discoveries that changed how people dove.
Amazing Diving Helmets
One of the most exciting parts of the museum is its huge collection of diving helmets. These helmets come from more than 20 different countries! You can even see special atmospheric diving suits. One example is the "Iron Mike" suit, which was made in the 1930s. These suits allowed divers to go very deep without feeling the pressure of the water.
Special Achievements
Sally Bauer has received some important awards for her work. In 2011, she was added to the Women Divers Hall of Fame. This is a special group that honors women who have done amazing things in diving. She also received the NOGI Award in 2019, which is a very high honor in the diving world.
The mayor of Islamorada even declared January 12, 2019, as "Dr. Sally Bauer Day." Both Joe and Sally Bauer were also founding members of special groups called the Historical Diving Society in both the US and the UK. These groups help keep the history of diving alive.
