The Hoag Classic is an exciting golf tournament. It is part of the PGA Tour Champions. This special golf tour is for professional golfers who are 50 years old or older. The Hoag Classic takes place every year in March. It is held in Newport Beach, California, at the Newport Beach Country Club. This golf course was designed by William Francis Bell in 1954.
The tournament first started in 1995. Back then, it was called the Toshiba Senior Classic. Later, it was known as the Toshiba Classic. In 2019, a health network called Hoag became the main sponsor. That's when the tournament got its current name, the Hoag Classic.
One memorable moment happened in 1997. The tournament had the longest sudden-death playoff in the history of the PGA Tour Champions. In a playoff, golfers keep playing extra holes until one wins. Bob Murphy won against Jay Sigel on the ninth extra hole! This record was later broken in another tournament.
Who Has Won the Hoag Classic?
Many great golfers have won the Hoag Classic over the years. The tournament has seen champions from different countries. Each year, golfers compete for a large prize, called the "purse." The winner is the golfer who finishes with the fewest strokes.
