He won this major tournament after a thrilling playoff against golf legend Tom Watson. From 2004 to 2009, Stewart Cink was often ranked among the top 10 golfers in the world. His highest ranking was 5th in 2008.

Early Life and School
Stewart Cink was born in Huntsville, Alabama. He grew up in a nearby town called Florence. He went to Bradshaw High School there. After high school, he studied Management at Georgia Tech. He also played golf for the school's team, the Yellow Jackets. He finished college in 1995 and then became a professional golfer.
Becoming a Pro Golfer
Stewart Cink started his professional career strong. In 1996, he won the Mexican Open. He also won three events on the Nike Tour, which is now known as the Korn Ferry Tour. Because of his success, he joined the PGA Tour in 1997. In his very first year on the PGA Tour, he won the Canon Greater Hartford Open.
Big Wins and Achievements
Stewart Cink continued to play well on the PGA Tour. He won the MCI Classic in 2000. In 2004, he had a fantastic year. He won the MCI Heritage and the WGC-NEC Invitational. The WGC-NEC Invitational is one of the important World Golf Championships events. He finished fifth on the PGA Tour's money list that year.
In 2008, Cink reached his highest world ranking. He became the sixth-best golfer in the world. This happened after he won the Travelers Championship.
Winning the Open Championship
On July 19, 2009, Stewart Cink achieved a huge dream. He won his first major golf title. This was at the 138th Open Championship in Scotland. He played against 59-year-old Tom Watson in a four-hole playoff. Cink won by six strokes, making him a major champion.
Recent Victories
After his big win in 2009, Cink continued to play golf. On September 13, 2020, he won the Safeway Open. This was his first win since the Open Championship. Then, on April 18, 2021, he won the RBC Heritage for the third time. He became one of only four players to win twice in a PGA Tour season after turning 47. The other players were Sam Snead, Julius Boros, and Kenny Perry. Cink also set new records for the lowest scores in that tournament.
Stewart Cink has won a total of 8 PGA Tour events. He also won 3 Nike Tour events and 1 Hooters Tour event. He has won the Mexican Open twice. More recently, he has also won two events on the PGA Tour Champions, which is for older golfers. He won The Ally Challenge in August 2024 and the Insperity Invitational in May 2025.

Stewart Cink has often represented the United States in team golf events. He was part of the winning Presidents Cup teams in 2000, 2005, 2007, and 2009.
