History of Hochsauerland
This district was created in 1975. Before that, there were three smaller districts: Arnsberg, Brilon, and Meschede. They all joined together to form the Hochsauerland district. This was part of a big plan to reorganize districts in North Rhine-Westphalia.
What Does the Coat of Arms Mean?
The coat of arms for Hochsauerland is special. It looks just like the old one from the Arnsberg district. You can see an eagle on it. This eagle was a symbol for the powerful earls of Arnsberg long ago.
In 1368, the Arnsberg county lost its independence. It then became part of the land ruled by the bishops of Cologne. That's why the eagle on the coat of arms also has a cross from Cologne.
