Hoehne is a small community in Colorado, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated town" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's not an official city or town with its own local government. However, the government still counts its population for official records. Hoehne is located in Las Animas County. In 2020, about 80 people lived there.

History

Hoehne was started in 1859 by a German immigrant named William Hoehne. Back then, this area was part of the Territory of New Mexico. William Hoehne was very important for the community. He helped create the Hoehne Ditch Company, which brought water for farming. He also brought the first mill and threshing machine to the area. These machines helped farmers process their crops.

William Hoehne was a big farmer himself. He grew about 1,000 acres of strawberries, apples, and cherries. Today, Hoehne is still a farming community. However, the main crops have changed from fruits to alfalfa and grass hay.

The population of Hoehne today is around 80 people. But in its busiest times, the town had many more things. It had a hotel, a train station called "Hoehnes," a blacksmith shop, a Catholic church, and several stores. The train station was closed in 1967. It was moved twice and is now in Texas Creek. There, it was fixed up to look like it did originally. The old Hoehne train station sign can still be seen at its first location.

Hoehne is also located near the famous Santa Fe Trail. You can find a historical marker about one mile north of the town on County Road 42.0.

Geography

Hoehne is located in the western part of Las Animas County. It sits on high ground north of the Purgatoire River. It is about 11 miles northeast of Trinidad, which is the main town of the county.

The Hoehne CDP covers an area of about 8.046 square kilometers. All of this area is land, with no water.

Population Information
