P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is an awesome public park right on the shores of Lake Michigan. It's located in the U.S. state of Michigan, near the towns of Norton Shores and Grand Haven. This park is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
The park covers a huge area of 1,200 acres. It also boasts three miles of beautiful sandy beach along Lake Michigan. It's a fantastic place for outdoor adventures and learning about nature!

Park History and Naming
P.J. Hoffmaster State Park was officially opened in 1963. The park is named after a very important person in Michigan's history: Percy James Hoffmaster.
Who Was Percy James Hoffmaster?
Percy James Hoffmaster is often called the "founder" of Michigan's state park system. He worked for a long time as the Superintendent of State Parks. Later, he became the longest-serving Director of the Department of Conservation. He helped create many of the wonderful parks we enjoy today.
Emma Genevieve Gillette's Contributions
The park's nature center is named after Emma Genevieve Gillette. She was a dedicated person who helped Percy Hoffmaster find great locations for new state parks. Her work was very important in expanding Michigan's park system.

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park offers many exciting things to do for visitors of all ages. It's a perfect spot for exploring nature and enjoying the outdoors.
Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center
The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center is a must-see! It has cool, interactive exhibits that teach you all about the unique sand dune ecosystem found in the park. You can learn how dunes form and why they are so important.

Exploring the Trails and Beach
The park has ten miles (16 km) of hiking trails. These trails let you explore different parts of the park. One popular spot is the Dune Climb Stairway, which takes you up the tallest dune for amazing views!
In the winter, three miles (5 km) of the trails are groomed. This means they are prepared for cross-country skiing, offering a fun winter activity. The park also has two campgrounds where you can stay overnight. Of course, the three miles of sandy beach on Lake Michigan are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or just relaxing.
Bird Watching Opportunities
P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is a fantastic place for bird watchers. Many different kinds of birds visit the park, especially during migration seasons.
You might see beautiful songbirds like wood thrushes and orioles. Various species of warblers and sparrows also pass through. If you're lucky, you might even spot migrating raptors. These include sharp-shinned hawks, broad-winged hawks, and sometimes even an eagle or a falcon!
